Dental Cleanings
Clinton Township, MI

Woman talking to dentist during dental exam at Enhance Family Dental in Clinton Township, MI.On average, people end up losing 12 of their permanent teeth by the time they have turned 50, according to the National Institutes of Health. The top reasons for this alarming statistic are cavities and periodontal diseases as well as gingivitis.

Our teeth and gums are under constant attack from acid, bacteria, and viruses, which all pose health risks. However, it is the enamel-eroding bacteria that form colonies of sticky film on our teeth, known as plaque that can become a precursor for tooth ailments.

When the bacteria starts to consume sugar, they start to secrete acids, which if not removed, can result in the decay of enamel. This serves as a natural defense of our teeth and also give them their whiteness. Even with routine brushing and flossing at home, tartar can develop. At Enhance Family Dental, Brian Hill, DDS recommends periodic professional dental cleaning every 6 to 12 months, which is the best way to prevent tooth decay and disease.

What to Expect in a Basic Cleaning

•  At Enhance Family Dental, we will begin by examining the teeth and gum, before starting the cleaning procedure. All our cleaning tools are disinfected and sterilized beforehand to ensure your safety.
•  The first tool that is generally used to clean teeth involves ultrasonic vibrations that can loosen large pieces of tartar from the surface of your teeth. It also sprays streams of water to wash away the debris.
•  Once the larger pieces have been removed, we will switch to finer instruments referred to as scalers to scrape out stubborn plaque and smooth out the tooth surface. Each tooth must be scaled thoroughly to make sure all tartar has been removed.
•  We will then polish the teeth using a gritty-textured prophylaxis paste that is gently rubbed on each tooth to create a smooth and shiny surface.
•  Next, we will professionally floss your teeth to make sure any debris is not left on the teeth or below the gumline. You will be asked to rinse away detached plaque and debris throughout the procedure.
•  We may also apply fluoride treatment on your teeth to harden your teeth and provide them additional protection. The paste comes in a variety of flavors and will be placed on foam trays, which will be placed over your cleaned teeth. After 30 seconds to one minute of the treatment, you will be told to spit out the remaining gel.
•  We will also apply a fluoride varnish to your teeth which will harden almost immediately.

What Happens If You Don’t Prioritize Oral Hygiene?

Some people believe that since they brush and floss their teeth regularly and do not indulge in bad dietary habits, they do not need annual dental cleanings. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Regular dental appointments at Enhance Family Dental can help you get rid of stubborn tartar as well as alert you of the potential tooth and gum diseases.

For those who do not exercise proper oral care, skipping dental visits will not just put them at risk for cavities, gum diseases, and eventual tooth loss, but it can also negatively affect their overall health. You may end up suffering from poor cardiovascular health, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and premature delivery in pregnant women, according to the Mayo Clinic.
