Dental Exams

About 100 million Americans fail to visit their dentists every year, according to the American Dental Association. Some people operate under the assumption that since they no longer have natural teeth or take good care of their teeth at home, they do not need to visit the dentist. However, it is recommended that adults should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a dental exam.

At Enhance Family Dental, we know that many oral health problems do not become evident until they are at an advanced stage. Some examples are gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer. Regular visits to Enhance Family Dental will allow us to find early symptoms of oral diseases and treat them in their initial stage.

People at High Risk For Oral Issues

Generally, scheduling a dental exam appointment at Enhance Family Dental twice a year works well for most people. People who have very good oral hygiene and very little risk of cavities or tooth decay may need to visit just once a year. However, there are some who need more frequent treatments. These people may have a high risk of oral diseases and may need to have a dental exam every three or four months, as recommended. These people include:
•  People with diabetes
•  Smokers
•  People who have high alcohol intake
•  Pregnant women
•  People suffering from gum disease at present
•  People who have hereditary oral issues
•  People with a compromised immune system

What to Expect in a Dental Exam

At Enhance Family Dental, Brian Hill, DDS will:
•  Assess you oral hygiene and health
•  Look for signs of tooth decay and gum and bone disease
•  Look for cracked, chipped, or broken teeth in need of tooth replacement or restoration
•  Check your bite
•  Check and measure gum pockets
•  Evaluate your need for fluoride treatment
•  Check for oral cancer by examining the insides of your mouth, under the jaw, and the sides of the neck
•  Take dental x-rays to see detailed images of your mouth

During the dental exams, we will also request your medical history, including past and current health problems.

Furthermore, we will take into account your medication intake and its effect on your oral health. This will help us determine whether you are at risk of any oral disease. For example, diabetes can lead to gum disease while medications that result in dry mouth can lead to tooth rot.

If you use prosthetics like bridges or dentures, we will check their fit and discuss if they need adjustment to comfortably sit in your mouth.

Dental exams will also include demonstrating the proper way to brush and floss, counseling about good dietary habits and use of tobacco and substance, and other lifestyle changes that can help improve oral health.

The schedule for any person can change any time. During periods of illness or stress, you may need to visit Enhance Family Dental more often. We can help you treat any changes or infection in your mouth. If you take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home and we do not find any signs of tooth decay or gum disease, we can extend your time between dental exam visits.
