Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment is a procedure to repair and save badly damaged teeth. Decades ago, root canal treatments were often quite uncomfortable and painful. However, now, at Enhance Family Dental, our patients experience little to no pain during a root canal. It is much more painful living with a decayed tooth.
When Does a Root Canal Becomes Necessary?
Our teeth contain dental pulp which extends from the crown to the tip of the tooth root in the jawbone. When a tooth is chipped, cracked or badly decayed, bacteria can enter the dental pulp. Left untreated, it can cause serious oral health issues.
Here are some of the conditions in which a root canal becomes necessary.
If tooth decay is left untreated, it can reach the dental pulp - the soft core inside the tooth - and cause infection. This will make the dental pulp inflamed and very painful, and in some cases, the soft tissue may also die.
A root canal may also be performed if an abscess forms in the tooth. This happens when the dental pulp dies and a pocket forms at the tip of the root. Pus will accumulate in this area and, sometimes, the abscess can be seen outside the gums in the form of a pimple. You may also notice pus draining from the pimple or notice a bad taste in your mouth.
If left untreated, the abscess will continue to infect the surrounding bone and tissue. Although antibiotic can offer limited effectiveness, the only way to completely address this problem is to have a root canal and clean out all bacteria from inside the pulp chamber and root canals.
If a tooth becomes chipped or fractured and the crack is deep enough to reach the pulp, you may need a root canal. If your tooth has broken in a way that doesn’t leave much undamaged structure above the gumline, a root canal may need to be performed so that a post and crown can be placed to restore the tooth.
