What Is Teeth Whitening?
Tooth whitening is a dental procedure which removes stains and discoloration from the teeth and brings them back to their natural white color. Teeth whitening is among the most popular dental procedures. It is not a one-time procedure and needs to be repeated time to time if you want to keep your teeth bright. How long your teeth remain white depends on your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits.
Why Do You Need to Whiten Your Teeth
Our teeth contain a white outer layer called the enamel. The white and bright color of our teeth is created by the reflection and refraction of light when it hits the enamel. Every day, a thin coating of protein called pellicle is formed on your teeth. Bacteria can attach itself to the pellicle and eat its way through to the enamel. As the enamel erodes and becomes less thick, the yellowish color of your dentin, a calcified tissue beneath the enamel, shows through.
Tooth enamel also contains pores that can retain stains. There are also several other reasons why your teeth lose their brightness.

Types of Whitening Procedures
There are two main types of whitening procedures:
Vital whitening procedure is performed on teeth with a live nerve. At Enhance Family Dental, Brian Hill, DDS will apply a whitening gel to the surface of your tooth. This gel contains hydrogen peroxide, a bleaching agent. A powerful curing light is then applied to the gel, accelerating the bleaching process.
This process takes place in multiple 30-60 minute sessions. How often we need to apply the gel depends on the severity of your discoloration, how white you want your teeth to be, and the whitening method being used.
If you want to whiten your teeth at home, we will take impressions of your upper and lower arch and will fabricate custom-made whitening trays for you. Each mouthpiece will be filled with a whitening gel and then applied to your teeth for several hours a day. Most people get the amount of whitening they want in a week or two.
Vital whitening may not work for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment. That is because the discoloration is coming from inside the restored tooth. If this is the case with you, we recommend the non-vital whitening procedure.
In this procedure, we will place a whitening gel inside your tooth and place a temporary filling over it. The tooth will be left undisturbed for several days. This treatment may need to be repeated until you achieve the tooth shade you want.
Teeth whitening is not a permanent solution as the stains and discoloration will reappear after some time. If you smoke or consume dark drinks, you may have to get your teeth whitened every month. However, if you avoid them and ensure good dietary habits and oral hygiene, your teeth will remain white and bright for up to 6 to 12 months.
